Jim Tan

I’m a photographer and writer and I love crafting stories through pictures and words. I’m drawn to the world’s wild places and so naturally tend towards telling stories related to them. I was lucky to have a very multi-cultural upbringing which gave me a great respect for the many ways of viewing the world so I’m always interested in exploring different perspectives on how we can live alongside nature in a sustainable way.

I have an MSc in Conservation which was a great grounding in the field, but I have been privileged to learn so much more through countless conversations with researchers, practitioners and ordinary people living in remote places. I am also actively involved in conservation focussed impact investment projects including the Kuzuko Private Game Reserve in South Africa the Conservation and Rural Enterprise (CARE) Fund which works around the Budongo Forest in Uganda.

Photography and journalism have introduced me to some of the most interesting people doing the most amazing things in the most beautiful places. I am eternally grateful to the many people who so generously share their time and their stories with me. It reminds me how important stories are to our culture and the responsibility of passing on those stories with empathy and integrity.
